Fed: Casinos call for crackdown on gambling cruises to nowhere
Australian Casino operators say gambling on short-term ship cruises to nowhere shouldbe banned or at least subjected to Australian gaming laws.
Australian Casino Association executive director CHRIS DOWNY says operators view withconcern the promotion of two-night trips by Star Cruises Ltd starting on Anzac Day.
He says the Superstar Virgo and Superstar Leo are floating casinos.
Mr DOWNY says that far from being a boon to tourism, these short-term trips are nothingmore than a blatant attempt to entice patrons away from Australian casinos.
He says the two ships are normally used for gambling purposes out of Singapore and Hong Kong.
Mr DOWNY's called on federal and state governments to ban gambling on all two-nighttrips to nowhere.
And he's called for the introduction of legislation requiring cruise ship companiesto advertise the fact they have casino-type facilities on board so they can be made tocomply with Australian gaming laws similar to those applying to Australian casinos.
